Daddy made replacement axle and end cap assemblies so now you can have the PLANET3 even on this goddamn garbage hub! Please watch the video below for an explanation of what needs to be done before you proceed with the regular installation of the PLANET3!

PLANET3 is a planetary gear set which reduces the rotation speed of the magnet used by the wheel speed sensor three times. For every three full rotations of the rear wheel, the magnet completes just one full rotation - effectively making the bike think it's doing 1/3 the speed it is actually doing, thus increasing the pedal assist speed limit by a factor of 3. For the Specialized models sold on EU/UK market this translates into a speed limit increase from 25 to 75 km/h (15.5 to 47 mph), while the US and Canada models limit is raised from 20 to 60 mph. If it is not obvious from the previous description of how the device works, the speed display will show 1/3 of the "real" speed the bike is moving at. Another byproduct is that the millage will be 1/3 of the "real" millage from the moment you install the device. This inaccurate display of speed/distance never used to be an issue because most Specialized e-bikes came without a screen (except road going versions), but since Vado is mostly a road-going bike I'm including this warning: IF you feel that you REALLY NEED to be able to see your speed AND you don't feel like multiplying by 3 to get the real value - PLANET3 might not be for you. Most users never give this a second thought and realize that getting rid of the speed limit takes priority.. but, to each their own.

As far as installation goes, please use the two links provided to the side under "Useful links" because they will cover the two necessary steps: 1. replace the end cap and axle on the stock hub; 2. install the sun gear, planet and ring gear using the new depth tool. No sensor carrier replacements, no sensor relocations on the Vado - all the steps are done at the hub/wheel.

This is for a non-IGH Vado/Como Gen2 models. IGH models are NOT COMPATIBLE with mechanical PLANET3 because of their internally geared rear hubs and belt drives. If you have a IGH model, please visit PLANET3 for IGH models.

Turbo Vado 3.0 Step-Through (Gen2) also has a different rear hub (Shimano FH-MT400-B centerlock) and to avoid confusion is defined as a completely different product here: Vado 3.0 Step-Through (Gen2).

Due to IGH models having a rear hub with internal gearing and a belt drive, it is not compatible with the “mechanical” PLANET3. However, it will work perfectly with the newly developed PLANET3-E chip which solves the issue of hub and brake rotor compatibility along with having multiple other neat features and capabilities.

This chip version plugs into the motor in between the speed sensor/display/motor (much like any other chip out there for Bosch and other systems). It also keeps the speed/distance readouts correct while the mechanical PLANET3 would show 3x less. It’s undetectable, updateable via Bluetooth and more future-proof. Uses original connectors and the application for mobile phones is available for both Android and iPhone users. Installation instructions video is below (slightly outdated by now, there’s no more need for the USB cable, the o-rings were also fixed). As model-to-model differences go it’s 99% the same procedure: take off the crank, unscrew the 3-4 screws, remove the non-drive side motor cover, plug in and put everything back. I’d suggest not putting on the motor cover and crank back until you’ve tried powering on the bike and testing the functionality and setup of the PLANET3-E via the app.

As far as the initial setup goes – there are descriptions by each item in the app, please read them. There’s also the videos on the installation instructions page in the PLANET3-E section.

Two additional parameters in the Tune menu are:

Walk button derestricts – OFF (this should be off by default, we don’t really want to use the walk button to turn the chip ON/OFF because you might want to use the walk button for walk mode and then you’d be toggling the chip on/off all the time).

Mechanical mode – OFF (off by default, but we might have to use this while I fix some bugs that might relate to bikes with MasterMind TCU. This button switches the PLANET3-E chip into a mode where it behaves exactly like the mechanical PLANET3. Simply dividing the speed sensor signals by 3 so the speed readout and distance readouts will be only 1/3 of real). In this mode the bike is actually slightly more powerful due to how motors are tuned. So, there’s that as an advantage – and also low mileage bike. 🙂 ALSO, Walk button will work perfectly even with Mechanical mode ON as PLANET3 chip will detect when there’s no cadence and Walk mode is being used and then it will not remove signals coming from the sensor. Brilliant, I know.
